Tohuvavohu (U Toronto) report on behalf of the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory Team: At 04:10:01 UT, the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) triggered and located GRB 210824A (trigger=1070157). Swift slewed immediately to the burst. The BAT on-board calculated location is RA, Dec 232.132, +11.135 which is RA(J2000) = 15h 28m 32s Dec(J2000) = +11d 08' 07" with an uncertainty of 3 arcmin (radius, 90% containment, including systematic uncertainty). The BAT light curve showed a multi-peaked structure with a duration of about 50 sec. The peak count rate was ~1600 counts/sec (15-350 keV), at ~3 sec after the trigger. The XRT began observing the field at 04:15:08.4 UT, 306.9 seconds after the BAT trigger. Using promptly downlinked data we find a fading, uncatalogued X-ray source located at RA, Dec 232.10513, 11.15208 which is equivalent to: RA(J2000) = 15h 28m 25.23s Dec(J2000) = +11d 09' 07.5" with an uncertainty of 7.2 arcseconds (radius, 90% containment). This location is 113 arcseconds from the BAT onboard position, within the BAT error circle. This position may be improved as more data are received; the latest position is available at https://www.swift.ac.uk/sper. A power-law fit to a spectrum formed from promptly downlinked event data gives a column density in excess of the Galactic value (3.31 x 10^20 cm^-2, Willingale et al. 2013), with an excess column of 8.5 (+5.30/-4.44) x 10^21 cm^-2 (90% confidence). UVOT took a finding chart exposure of 150 seconds with the White filter starting 310 seconds after the BAT trigger. No credible afterglow candidate has been found in the initial data products. The 2.7'x2.7' sub-image covers none of the XRT error circle. The 8'x8' region for the list of sources generated on-board covers 100% of the XRT error circle. The list of sources is typically complete to about 18 mag. No correction has been made for the expected extinction corresponding to E(B-V) of 0.036. Burst Advocate for this burst is K. L. GCN Circ. 30700), from 320 s to 28.9 ks after the BAT trigger. The data are entirely in Photon Counting (PC) mode. The enhanced XRT position for this burst was given by Goad et al. (GCN Circ. 30702). The late-time light curve (from T0+3.9 ks) can be modelled with a power-law decay with a decay index of alpha=0.94 (+0.25, -0.23). A spectrum formed from the PC mode data can be fitted with an absorbed power-law with a photon spectral index of 2.4 (+/-0.4). The best-fitting absorption column is 6.8 (+3.1, -2.3) x 10^21 cm^-2, in excess of the Galactic value of 3.3 x 10^20 cm^-2 (Willingale et al. 2013). The counts to observed (unabsorbed) 0.3-10 keV flux conversion factor deduced from this spectrum is 3.6 x 10^-11 (8.4 x 10^-11) erg cm^-2 count^-1. A summary of the PC-mode spectrum is thus: Total column: 6.8 (+3.1, -2.3) x 10^21 cm^-2 Galactic foreground: 3.3 x 10^20 cm^-2 Excess significance: 4.6 sigma Photon index: 2.4 (+/-0.4) If the light curve continues to decay with a power-law decay index of 0.94, the count rate at T+24 hours will be 2.4 x 10^-3 count s^-1, corresponding to an observed (unabsorbed) 0.3-10 keV flux of 8.5 x 10^-14 (2.0 x 10^-13) erg cm^-2 s^-1. L. Page et al. 2021, GCN 30700). The Fermi GBM Final Real-time Localization (GCN 30699) is consistent with the Swift BAT position. The angle from the Fermi LAT boresight is 75 degrees. The GBM light curve consists of a single emission episode with a duration (T90) of about 33 s (10-1000 keV). The time-averaged spectrum from T0-0.6 to T0+28 s is best fit by a power law function with an exponential high-energy cutoff. The power law index is -1.2 +/- 0.1 and the cutoff energy, parameterized as Epeak, is 552 +/- 286 keV. The event fluence (10-1000 keV) in this time interval is (5.3 +/- 0.6)E-06 erg/cm^2. The 1-sec peak photon flux measured starting from T0+4.1 s in the 10-1000 keV band is 2.2 +/- 0.2 ph/s/cm^2. The BAT ground-calculated position is RA, Dec = 232.115, 11.169 deg which is RA(J2000) = 15h 28m 27.5s Dec(J2000) = +11d 10' 09.9" with an uncertainty of 1.2 arcmin, (radius, sys+stat, 90% containment). The partial coding was 60%. The mask-weighted light curve shows a single broad pulse with some sub-structure. It begins around T-15 sec, peaks at the trigger time and decays to background by T+40 sec. We note that the light curve has a gap from T+110 sec to T+240 sec due to the burst going out of the field of view (for a pre-planned slew that started before the trigger had been fully processed) and then coming back into FOV when the pre-planned slew ended and the automated target slew had started. The burst appears to be over before this time. T90 (15-350 keV) is 37.55 +- 4.79 sec (estimated error including systematics). The time-averaged spectrum from T-13.70 to T+30.94 sec is best fit by a simple power-law model. The power law index of the time-averaged spectrum is 1.18 +- 0.11. The fluence in the 15-150 keV band is 1.7 +- 0.1 x 10^-6 erg/cm2. The 1-sec peak photon flux measured from T+1.02 sec in the 15-150 keV band is 1.3 +- 0.2 ph/cm2/sec.
