Compton Observatory Science Report #121 Thursday, May 27, 1993 Eric Chipman, Compton Observatory Science Support Center Questions or comments can be sent to the Compton SSC. Phone 301/286-7764, e-mail SPAN GROSSC::CHIPMAN, Internet chipman@grossc.gsfc.nasa.gov. The Compton spacecraft continues normal operations. There was one maneuver this week, to the attitude of period 222 (z-axis target NGC 4151, x-axis target MCG +8-11-11). The maneuver was on Monday, May 24, and the times were 1517Z to 1548Z. The maneuver angle was 106 degrees, and the HGA Boom angle with respect to the equator is now 13.3 degrees. BATSE ----- During viewing period 222 BATSE folded-on-board pulsar data is being collected for the SMC X-1, Cen X-3, the Crab pulsar, Her X-1, and PSR 1642-03. For the Crab observation, LAD and SD data are being collected simultaneously. In addition, 31 ms resolution single sweep data is being collected for pulsar searches using LAD 7. As of May 25th, BATSE has detected 653 cosmic gamma-ray bursts out of a total of 2248 on-board triggers in 763 days of operation. There have been 648 triggers due to solar flares with emission above 60 keV. The number of triggered bursts caught up with the number of triggered solar flares on May 17th with the 647th burst. COMPTEL ------- The COMPTEL experiment is performing well and continues routine observations. The solar observing mode of COMPTEL was disabled earlier this week, following the maneuver of the Compton GRO spacecraft to begin observing period 222, toward NGC 4151. No significant solar activity at MeV energies was detected by COMPTEL during the two weeks when the Sun was within the field of view of the instruments. EGRET ----- EGRET operations were normal this week. There was an EGRET team meeting aimed largely at completing the analysis of Phase 1 data and publishing it. Significant time was also spent on matters related to the Compton Observatory Science Working Team Meeting and the Users Committee Meeting. OSSE ---- OSSE operations are normal. For viewing period 222, the Z-axis target is NGC 4151 (PI team) and the X-axis target is MCG +8-11-11 (PI team). For 24 and 25 May, viewing priority was assigned to NGC 4151 to maximize data collection during the coordinated viewing with ASCA and ROSAT. The slewing response to BATSE solar triggers is enabled. Since the last report, there have been no slews to the Sun. Data from viewing period 9.0 will be delivered to the GRO Science Support Center Archive today. Targets during this period were the black hole candidate GX339-4, the galactic plane at 339 deg longitude, and the starburst galaxy NGC 253. Updated Timeline: ----------------- The following is the latest timeline for Phase 2, updated to show the Reboost activities. The last period shown, period 233, may require some further changes before it becomes final. 5/20/93 COMPTON PHASE 2 VIEWING PLAN AS OF May 20, 1993 GRO Z-AXIS* VIEW +Z-AXIS* GRO Z-AXIS* GALACTIC GRO X-AXIS* ----OSSE PRIMARY TARGET---- ----OSSE SECONDARY TARGET-- PER.
