TO: All GCN Notice recipients RE: Fermi-LAT_Ground Notice type is available DT: 02 Aug 11 INTRODUCTION: The GCN system has been modified to incorporate the distribution of the Fermi-LAT "ground-processed" position notices. Unlike the real-time Fermi-LAT notices (Update) that are generated on-board, this notice type is the result of automated ground processing. This automated processing (a) refines the position for on-board triggered events, and (b) scans the total stream of LAT events applying trigger criteria looking for bursts that did not trigger on-board. All the processing to derive the position is automated; there is no human involvement at this stage. These will occur about less than 5 times per year. The time delays for the LAT_GND are in the 6-24 hours range (due to full data-set telemetry downlink delays). The location uncertainties are in the 10-60 arcmin range. This new notice type is available in all the formats and distribution methods: socket-based (binary & XML VOEvent) and email-based (full-format, the 4 shorter formats for cellphones and pagers, and the XML VOEvent format). All the filtering methods are applicable to this notice type. ACTION ITEM: If, after reviewing the information below, you want to receive these Fermi-LAT_GND Position notices, please send me a request to have them enabled. You can do this by forwarding this email to scott@milkyway.gsfc.nasa.gov . Or you can go to http://gcn.gsfc.nasa.gov/gcn/config_builder.html and select "#2 Modify an existing config". You can also take this opportunity to make other changes to your config. ARCHIVE STORAGE: The GCN/FERMI Notices are archived within the GCN website in the Table of FERMI GRBs: http://gcn.gsfc.nasa.gov/gcn/fermi_grbs.html This archives both the GBM Notice types and the LAT notice types.
