TO: All GCN Notice Recipient Sites RE: The AGILE_MCAL_ALERT Notice type has been added to GCN DT: 11 May 2019 INTRODUCTION: The GCN system has been modified to incorporate the distribution of a new Notice Type from AGILE -- the AGILE_MCAL_ALERT. These report on events that trigger the MCAL instrument on AGILE. Like all the other sources of GRB information within the GCN system, users can elect to receive this new Notice type. These notices alert the community on transient events that trigger the AGILE MCAL on-board trigger logic in one or more predefined timescales (i.e., sub-ms, 1 ms, 16 ms, 64 ms, 256 ms, 1024 ms, and 8192 ms), and are successively selected and identified as GRBs by an offline burst search algorithm that yields total significance values greater than 5 sigma. More information about the AGILE_MCAL_ALERT notices can be found at https://gcn.gsfc.nasa.gov/agile.html The GCN/AGILE-MCAL ALERT notices will be archived within the GCN website in the https://gcn.gsfc.nasa.gov/agile_mcal.html web table. OCCURANCE RATE and LATENCY: The expected occurance rate of this notice is about 20/year. These are produced with a latency of 40 to 130 minutes (ie the total time from the peak of the gamma-rays to when the GCN Notices are being pushed out the community). DISTRIBUTION METHODS: This notice type (like all the other types in GCN) is available by all the socket-based (binary and voevent) and email-based distribution methods. CONTENT and FORMATS: This notice type contains: the trigger number, the date & time of the trigger, the total counts in the pulse and in the peak and the significance in unit of sigma, the background level, the trigger_time window (sub-ms to 8 sec) and the full integration time, a url pointing to the lightcurve, the energy window, and the Lon,Lat of the spacecraft at the time of the trigger. The 160-byte binary socket packet contents and format is described in detail in the socket packet definition document (https://gcn.gsfc.nasa.gov/sock_pkt_def_doc.html). The AGILE_MCAL_ALERT Notice is type=105. FILTERING: Sites can elect to receive the AGILE_MCAL_ALERT Notice type. See https://gcn.gsfc.nasa.gov/filtering.html filtering to see which filter functions are applicable. This filtering applies to all the existing distribution methods/media (socket-based, email-based, and voevent-based). TEST NOTICES: There is no test_notice version for this notice type. RETRACTIONS: There is no retraction form of this AGILE_MCAL_ALERT type. E-MAIL EXAMPLES: Examples of the AGILE_MCAL_ALERT Notice type of the e-mail formats are shown below. The "/////" divider bars are NOT part of the messages. For those sites/people that use demons and/or incoming e-mail filters, the "Subject" lines for the notice type: GCN/AGILE-MCAL ALERT t issuance (after the first 2 contributors are received by GCN): //////////////// AGILE_MCAL_ALERT full e-mail format /////////////////////////// TITLE: GCN/AGILE-MCAL TRIGGER ALERT NOTICE NOTICE_DATE: Thu 09 May 19 13:46:16 UT NOTICE_TYPE: AGILE MCAL TRIGGER TRIGGER_NUM: 480925310 GRB_DATE: 18571 TJD; 88 DOY; 19/03/29 GRB_TIME: 22910.66 SOD {06:21:50.66} UT GRB_TOTAL_COUNTS: 113 [counts] GRB_SIGNIF: 10.60 [sigma] PEAK_COUNTS: 60 [counts] PEAK_SIGNIF: 8.19 [sigma] BACKGROUND: 21 [counts/0.032 sec] DATA_TIME_SCALE: 0.032 [sec] INTEG_TIME: 0.059 [sec] SC_LON_LAT: 30.55,-2.03 [deg] TRIGGER_LOGIC: '','','','64ms','','','' ENERGY_RANGE: 400 - 100000 [keV] LIGHT_CURVE: http://www.agilescienceapp.it/notices/GRB_061890_480925310.667604.png COMMENTS: AGILE MCAL TRIGGER. ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Check the webpage for the details about the other formats: https://gcn.gsfc.nasa.gov/agile_mcal.html SIGN-UP ACTION ITEM: Since the "Modify Sites Config" webform page has not yet been updated to encorporate the AGILE_MCAL_ALERT type, just forward this email (especially your SITE_NAME) to sbarthel@milkyway.gsfc.nasa.gov saying you want this type added to your configuration, and I will added it.
